RESUMO
O Centro Histórico de Campina Grande é uma área deliberada (em 2003) e delimitada pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico do Estado da Paraíba (IPHAEP) em 28 de junho de 2004, compreendendo um cinturão englobando ruas e praças centrais da cidade. Porém, seu tombamento não tem impedido que seus prédios e monumentos sejam destruídos pela voracidade do “progresso”, desfigurando o patrimônio histórico da cidade. No artigo, trazemos uma cartografia das últimas destruições ocorridas na área e criticamos a ausência de uma política de preservação. Entendemos que tombar uma área implica, acima de tudo, em pensar o que fazer e como fazer para a preservação do bem material tombado. Deve-se buscar saídas para que o tombamento não fique apenas no papel e entregue a própria sorte.

ABSTRACT
The Historic Center of Campina Grande is a deliberated area (in 2003)and bounded by the Institute of Historical and Artistic Patrimony of the State of Paraíba (IPHAEP) on June 28, 2004, comprising a belt covering the streets and central squares of the city. However, its tipping have not prevented its buildings and monuments that are destroyed by the greed of "progress", defacing the historic heritage of the city. In the paper, we present a mapping of the last destruction occurring in the area and criticize the lack of a preservation policy. We believe that a tipping area implies, above all, to think what to do and how to preserve the material overturned. We should seek solutions to the tipping will not be only on paper and delivered to their own devices.
